InterculturalCom: Dealing with Difference: Basic Interpersonal Skills (U8-P2)

Some Basic Interpersonal Skills Helpful in ICC

    Core Skills

    • Positiveness: Expression of positive attitudes toward self and others.
    • Other-Orientation: Attentiveness, interest, and concern for others.
    • Empathy: Feeling as the other feels.

    Meta Skills

    • Mindfulness: Being aware of the above skills.
    • Metacommunication: Being aware of what is happening in the communication. Being able to think and talk about the talk.

Even before developing effective intercultural communication skills, we need to learn and practice the above basic interpersonal skills.  These are fundamental.

    InterculturalCom: Dealing with Difference (U8-P1)

I use to call this lecture "Dealing with Difference," but now I've switched to "Effective Intercultural Communication."
See any reason I changed? Does "Dealing with Difference" imply anything?

Whatever you call it, in intercultural situations, how do we deal with or become more effective?

If we understand exactly where the problems were, then this may help.

The following model helps us spot the potential problems that may arise in intercultural encounters.

Data must be mobile, transferable, and instantly accessible. The key to enabling the portable and interactive you is the ability to synch up your data among your devices, as well as access to shared data. Your Internet Use?

    In a typical week…

    • How much time do you spend with e-mail?
    • How many times do you check email?
    • How much time do you spend browsing the Web?
    • How many times do you go to computer to browse?
    • What sites do you visit?
Is there a question or two missing that should be asked about Internet use?

InterculturalCom: Cultural Identity and The Debut (U7-P1)

An excellent way to explore the topics related to cultural identity is by watching The Debut.

Besides helping us to understand cultural identity, the film also allows to learn some about Filipino culture.

Here are some Filipino cultural literacy to learn from the film.
    • Tagalog: main language
    • Barkada: peer group
    • Oo: yes
    • Singkil: "the stick dance"
    Collectivism/Individualism Through Dance
See this video I posted on YouTube.  How does it relate to the film?

The above clip is from I'm Normal, You're Weird! Understanding Other Cultures. This was an excellent teaching resource.  I wish that it was released in some form on DVD.

Do you spot the following Filipino values?

    • Family/Group (Authority)
    • Food
    • Education/Success

Also, what do you notice in the film about Filipino "Time Orientation"?
