MediaTech: Key Theories Related to Media Tech (U1-P5)

What are some key theories related to communication/media technology?
  • Diffusion of Innovations
  • Social Construction of Technology
  • Technological Determinism
  • Winston’s Model Communication Technology Development
  • Others...

Examples:

Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations
“the process by which an innovation is communication through certain channels over time among the members of a social system.”(Rogers).

Winston’s Model Communication Technology Development
Winston's models explains how technologies develop from idea to prototype to diffusion.

MediaTech: What are the Parts of Technology? (U1-P4)

A technology usually has two components: hardware and software (Rogers).

“a hardware aspect, consisting of the tool that embodies the technology as a material or physical object.” (Rogers).

“a software aspect, consisting of the information base for the tool” (Rogers).
Think: user's manual.

MediaTech: What is Communication? What is Technology? (U1-P3)

What is Communication?
“Human communication is the process through which individuals – in relationships, groups, organizations, and societies – respond to and create messages to adapt to the environment and one another” (Ruben & Steward).

What is Technology?
DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS, 4TH ED.“a design for instrumental action that reduces the uncertainty in the cause-effect relationships involved in achieving a desired outcome”(Rogers).

"Tech" in the Dictionary: (Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster...)

How's the term "technology" used on Twitter right now.

So, given the above definitions, what is communication technology?  Media technology?

MediaTech: In Honor of Everett M. Rogers (U1-P1)

I teach this media tech course in honor of Ev.
He was my professor, adviser, co-author -- and my mentor.

If it weren't so out-of-date, I'd use this book that Ev wrote.

At least my graduate students get to use Ev's Diffusion of Innovations.

What is Culture?
Culture is the set of shared knowledge that influences a particular group of peoples' thoughts and behavior (Hart).

InterculturalCom: Mr. Nice Guy: An Introduction to Intercultural Communication [VID] (U1/P1)

Mr. Nice GuyThis is a clip that I edited and posted on YouTube. I use this clip in my Intercultural Communication course to introduce students to the difficulties of intercultural communication.

In the clip Jackie's fiancé has just arrived in the U.S.

Is there intercultural miscommunication? What is the problem exactly? Whose fault is it? Is it right to blame somebody?

Portal: No Escape - Adaptation of Video Game to Short Film [VID]

A Theory of AdaptationI recently started playing Portal 2 on the Xbox. Since one of my areas of research is adaptation, I thought this recently posted YouTube video was interesting. Traditionally those who studied adaptation studied how a novel was adapted into a film. More recently, adaptation studies started to look at other types of adaptations. The adaptation from video game to film is an example of other types of adaptation and my area of specialty.

How exactly does one adapt a video game into a film?  What is the process?

See my Delicious bookmarks for more on the Portal adaptation.

Penn and Teller in Norfolk, VA [VID]

This is a clip that I edited and posted on YouTube.  I use this clip and some occasional magic in my Research Methods course to illustrate critical thinking and promote curiosity. How did they do that? Figure it out yet?  Be sure to pause the video at about 2 minutes in and see if you can figure it out.
Penn & Teller Bullsh*t: Seasons 1-7

This local news clip is from their visit to the Norfolk, VA area in May 2002. My oldest daughter and I saw them when they were here in 2002. I hope they come back soon. Can anyone say "Class Field Trip?"

Because of their critical thinking/skepticism spin on magic, Penn and Teller are my favorite magicians. Check out their Bullsh*t TV program.

Future journalist, how would you handle a guest like Penn in your studio?

Did You Use Facebook as News Source During Hurricane?

It ain't called a "news feed" for nothin'.
Found the following comment on Facebook which got me thinking.

Did you use Facebook as a news source during the hurricane?   How often?   Did you go to FB (or Twitter) instead of watching coverage on TV or listening on radio?  I wonder if this is being researched.  I wonder how important of a role did FB play in communicating/diffusing news during the hurricane.

Textbooks I Use in My MediaTech Course

Broadcasting, Cable, the Internet and Beyond: An Introduction to Modern Electronic Media
Broadcasting, Cable, the Internet and Beyond: An Introduction to Modern Electronic Media

DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS, 4TH ED.
DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS, 4TH ED.

My undergraduates read the first book (Broadcasting, Cable, the Internet and Beyond)
My graduates read both.

I use a slightly older editions and encourage students to get a used copy. This approach saves students a lot of $$. Instead of $105, they pay $5. There may be some drawbacks, but those huge savings outweigh the drawbacks.

One of those drawbacks is the fact that an older textbook would not be up to date. However, I take care of that in lecture with coverage of current media tech news, etc.
