MediaTech: TV Tech: The Evolution of TV (W11-P3) [VID] Fa16


We've covered a variety of theories that explain the development and diffusion of media technologies (e.g. diffusion and technological determinism).  Let's now start to add another to our list.  Let's start to look at how technologies evolve.  Are there similarities between the biological theory of evolution and technological theory of evolution?

First, briefly what is the theory of evolution and how might it be applied to the evolution of media technologies, like TV?  




How has TV evolved?  When watching this what changes do you spot?  What features change?
Is it helpful to think of media technology evolving?



Along with Winston's model, Diffusion of Innovations, etc., we've now added the evolution of tech as another theory that helps explain how and why media tech develops and spreads throughout society.  We'll cover a little more on this theoretical perspective a little later.

Nowadays, you don't need a separate receiver.





The newest TV tech out there is UHDTV.

Ultra-high-definition television (also known as Ultra HD television or UHDTV) includes two types (1) 4K UHD (3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels tall or 8.3 megapixels) and 8K UHD (7680 pixels wide by 4320 pixels tall or 33.2 megapixels).

Before talking about how radio works, it is first helpful to understand the electromagnetic spectrum.  What is the electromagnetic spectrum?




Now, how does radio fit into this?  What does it have to do with the spectrum?  The following video provides a good overview.

HistMedia: TV Technologists: Farnsworth, Sarnoff & Zworykin (W12-P2) Fa15

Now let's return to our discussion of media technologists, the creators, the inventors of media.

Previously we studied the creation of radio by looking at the lives of de Forest, Armstrong and Sarnoff.

Next, we turn to TV technologists.  Note that Sarnoff returns to play a role in the beginnings of television too.

While Sarnoff did play an important role in the beginnings of TV, note that Sarnoff is more on the business side of things as he was with radio.  Who are the key inventors that deserve attention when talking about the beginnings of TV?

Here we study the creation of TV via a recent National Geographic Channel documentary titled AMERICAN GENIUS FARNSWORTH VS. SARNOFF.



Note that, as clearly stated at the beginning of the film, this NGC doc "includes dramatizations inspired by history."
