MediaTech: DigPhotog: Digital Photography vs. Film Photography [VID] (U11-P4)

So advances in technology have brought us the digital camera.  But, just because it is new tech, does that mean digital photography is better than film photography?

Compared to traditional film photography, what are the benefits of digital photography?   In the video below, two benefits are offered.  To that list we can add: (3) digital photography allows for a smaller storage space and (4) digital photography allows for easy editing.*

Note the key photography terms defined in the video?  Watch for the misspelling in the clip?

Does digital photography have relative advantage over film photography?

*Note that the video is a little dated. He says, for example, that film photography is still the standard. That is no longer the case.

MediaTech: DigPhotog: How Does a Camera Work? (U11-P3) [VID]

Let's shift our focus, excuse the pun, from how to take photographs to how does a camera work.

Let's start with, how does a digital camera work? What are the steps in the process?
Along with this, what are the parts of the camera relevant to a discussion of how it works?

Let's take a look at the process again, in a slightly different way.

If you'd like to learn more, I'd recommend two additional YouTube videos: (1) the more detailed "How Digital Cameras Really Work" and the longer "How Does a Camera Work?".

MediaTech: Digphotog Tech Goes Social and Mobile (U11-P1) [VID]

As beginning digital photogs, there are obvious apps and online services that you should be familiar with and should be using.  Apps and online services like Instagram and Flickr come to mind.

Besides, Flickr and Instagram, there is a little less obvious app/service that you should be using called Pinterest. Pinterest can help in two key ways.  It can help you more easily collect and share photographs from around the web that you like.

In his book, The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Photography, Miotke suggests that beginning photographers should keep a visual notebook.
"One excellent way to define your goals is to keep a collection of images that inspire you. You could simply write down a list of photo ideas, but as photographers are generally visual people, it’s usually more effective to collect pictures. Subscribe to magazines or visit the library. Look though catalogs, books, and Web sites like BetterPhoto.com—anything with the kind of photographs you enjoy" (Miotke)
I agree.  However, we can use Pinterest and update Miotke's idea of a visual notebook.

Key Questions:
Is photography a communication technology?  By the way, what is a communication technology?
How much is digital photography tied to social media?

MediaTech: Social Media and Web 2.0: Social Media Training (A Beginning) (U10-P3) [SLIDES] fa13

Note: The above is a presentation that I recently gave to a group of professors who had an interest in using social media and Web 2.0 in their teaching and research.  However, this same presentation can be slightly modified to include the use of social media and Web 2.0 by students and others.

As the slides says, the benefits of social media use, won't come without some work. Some learning and work required.

So, let's do that.

Let's see how you can use social media and Web. 2.0 to help build your expertise in a certain field.
Knowledge is power, so they say.  But, how do we gather that knowledge?  It is always changing.

Set-Up:

Next:

  • Follow one or two people/organizations on Twitter.
  • Use Twitter's search feature to see what people are saying about topics.
  • Within your Google/Gmail account, go to "More" and go to Google Reader.
  • Subscribe to an RSS feed that you have an interest in.
  • Within Reader, click on "Browse for stuff" and then "Search" and set up a subscription  to tweets that mention a keyword.
  • Now, go to your Diigo or Delicious account and bookmark a few web sites or news stories that you have an interest in.
  • Lastly, go to Ifttt and set up a connection between Reader and Diigo (or Delicious). This connection will allow you to "star" and item in Reader and it will automatically be bookmarked in social bookmarking site.
  • As you can see, there are plenty of other things to explore within Twitter, Reader, Diigo, Delicious and Ifttt.  Go to it, if you have the interest.  Let me know if I can help more.

MediaTech: Social Media and Web 2.0: Intro (U10-P1) fa13

What is social media?

"The term Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as 'a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.'" (Wikipedia).

So, Web 2.0 has something to do with social media. What is Web 2.0?

"The term Web 2.0 is associated with web applications that facilitate participatory information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design,[1] and collaboration on the World Wide Web. A Web 2.0 site allows users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators (prosumers) of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users (consumers) are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, video sharing sites, hosted services, web applications, mashups and folksonomies" (Wikipedia)

So, if this is Web 2.0, what was Web 1.0?
How do social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter fit in here?

DigPhotog: Controlling Lighting: White Balance (U8-P1) Fa13

Ever taken a photo like the one to the right where the photo looks a little yellowish?  This is a lighting problem. More specifically, this is a white balance problem.

Miokte defines white balance as "the camera setting used to correct any subtle color shits in an image that sometimes occur in different kinds of light.  The white balance setting can be set by either the camera or the photographer, depending on the camera model."

Whenever you take a photograph and you have your camera set on automatic, your camera looks out into the world and makes decisions about what settings to use for ISO, shutter speed and f-stop.  We've discussed this previously.  Along with ISO, shutter speed and f-stop, the camera also makes decisions about the white balance.  And, sometimes it makes a good decision and sometimes it makes a bad decision (like in the photo above).  When your camera can't seem to get it right, that is the time for you to step in and change the white balance yourself.  But, how?  Why?

MassMedia: Ideological Criticism: How to Do Ideological Criticism (U8-P5) Fa13

How to Do Ideological Criticism (Foss)

“The primary goal of the ideological critic is to discover and make visible the dominant ideology or ideologies embedded in an artifact and ideologies that are being muted in it” (Foss, p. 295-296).

  • Step 1: Formulate RQ
    • What is the ideology embodied in this artifact?
    • What are the implication of this ideology?
    • What are the alternative ideologies not expressed?
    • Are there aspects of the artifact that support emancipation? Etc.
  • Step 2: Select Unit of Analysis
    • What specific aspect(s) of the artifact will you focus on?
  • Step 3: Analyzing the Artifact
    • Identification of Nature of Ideology
      • What does the artifact ask the audience to believe, understand, feel or think about?
      • What are the arguments made in the artifact?
      • What is seen as good or valued?
      • What ideologies are hidden?
    • Identification of Interests Included
      • What is the power structure and what groups are supported?
    • Identification of Strategies in Support of Ideology
      • How does the rhetoric legitimize the ideology and interests of some groups over others?
      • How exactly is the dominant ideology supported?
      • How exactly are alternative ideologies hidden?

MassMedia: Ideological Criticism: Basic Concepts (U8-P1) Fa13

Key questions that you should keep in mind when covering this unit: (1) What is ideological criticism? (2) How do you do an ideological critique of a film?  (3) What film would you do an ideological critique of and why?

An now, for our main feature...
-----------------------------------

Ideological Criticism:

For our purposes here, ideological criticism is a particular type of rhetorical criticism.

Previously, we've gotten an idea of what criticism is.  So, what is an ideology?

Ideology:
  • “A system of shared meaning that represents the world for us; it gives us a common picture of of reality” (p. 296).
  • “A pattern or set of ideas, assumptions, beliefs, values, or interpretations of the world by which a culture or group operates” (Foss, p. 291).
So, an ideology shapes the way we see the world, what we pay attention to and what we do not.

What purpose does an ideology serve?  Where does an ideology come from?

And now to some related terms.

1. Hegemony:
  • “the process by which a social order remains stable by generating consent to its parameters through the production and distribution of ideological texts that define social reality for the majority of the people.” (from Rybacki & Rybacki, Oprah article)
What are these ideological texts?  Books, newspapers, web sites, political speeches, movies, etc.

So, these media texts develop in us an ideological perspective?

So, there are somethings we are not aware of, we don't see?

2. False consciousness:
  • “a failure to recognize the instruments of one's oppression or exploitation as one's own creation, as when members of an oppressed class unwittingly adopt views of the oppressor class” (American Heritage Dictionary).
So, we can live in a dominant ideology and be blind to other ways of seeing?

The Basic Argument of Ideological Criticism
  1. At the individual level, we recognize that the language that we use to describe people or things shapes the way we think/feel about those people or things and how we act toward them.
  2. “The notion of ideology takes the same idea to the level of large groups of people working together with the power of language to define and guide entire cultures” (p. 293).
  3. “When an ideology becomes hegemonic in a culture, certain interests or groups are served by it more than others – it represents the perspective of some groups more than others” (Foss, p. 294).
  4. “When an ideology becomes hegemonic through a process of accord and consent, it accumulates ‘the symbolic power to map or classify the world for others…’ It invites ‘us to understand the world in certain ways, but not in others’” (Foss, p. 295).
  5. “To maintain a position of dominance, a hegemonic ideology must be constructed, renewed, reinforced, and defended continually through the use of rhetorical strategies and practices” (Foss, p. 295).
How is the hegemonic ideology maintained? Who? With what?

Keep these basic concepts and questions in mind when watching clips from Manufacturing Consent.

InterculturalCom: Effective Intercultural Com: Anxiety & Uncertainty - Bricks 3 & 4 (U9-P4) Fa13

Before moving on to anxiety (Brick #3) and uncertainty (Brick #4), I should point out that we've already covered Bricks 1 and 2.

What are they?  What are thing we've already covered that lead to difficulty in intercultural situations?

They are difference in language (Brick #1) and differences in nonverbal communication (Brick #2).

Before moving to the next bricks, one last question: How do you tear down this part of the wall, how do you fix differences in language and nonverbal communication?

And now, anxiety and uncertainty.

How does uncertainty lead to anxiety?  Got an example?

How do you "tear down" these brick?   Which one would you fix first and once you fixed it would you have the second problem?

InterculturalCom: Effective Intercultural Com: Intercultural Communication Model (U9-P3) Fa13

Recall the Intercultural Communication Model?

There is a brick wall between us and effective intercultural communication.
What are the names of the bricks in this wall?  What specifically stops us from getting to effective intercultural communication?

InterculturalCom: Dealing with Difference (U9-P1) Fa13

I use to call this lecture unit "Dealing with Difference."
However, now I've switched to calling it "Effective Intercultural Communication."

See any reason why I changed it?  Does "Dealing with Difference" imply anything?  A negative connotation?

Whatever you call it, in intercultural situations, how do we deal with or become more effective?

One place to start is to have a clear sense of exactly what is causing an intercultural misunderstanding.  Is it a language thing?  Is it prejudice?  What exactly is causing the intercultural ineffectiveness?  If we understand where exactly the problem is, then we can move on to hopefully fixing the problem.

The following model helps us spot where the potential problems that may arise in intercultural encounters.

"221B: The Sherlock Holmes Web-Series 01: "No Place Like Holmes"" (My New Fav Vimeo Vid) [VID]

I just added this video as a favorite on my Vimeo account.

Description: "221b.ca LIKE US https://www.facebook.com/221bweb Part 1/5 EPISODE TWO: https://vimeo.com/71307597 It’s 1891 and military doctor, John Watson has returned home to England after a long and dangerous Afghanistan campaign. Seeking lodgings at an affordable price, he finds himself at 221B Baker St. Where he meets a young, volatile, brilliant and eccentric woman.... named Sherlock Holmes. 221B: The Sherlock Holmes Web Series was developed by Filmmaker Carter deLaat (House of Wolves, Mad Dog) focusing on the companionship of pop- culture’s most famous investigating duo: Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. The series puts an emphasis on the home-life of the classic "odd couple". Showing the dangerous life style Watson gets himself into living with Holmes after recently returning from Afghanistan. The period piece revolves around the mental trials Holmes puts Watson through in their Victorian London flat, keeping the doctor constantly on his toes. The series features guest characters including the faithful landlady Mrs. Hudson and the nefarious villain, Professor James Moriarty. The series will consist of five episodes, running from five to 8 mins in length each. They will be uploaded here and plat-formed through local sites including the Township of Brock website. 221B is the first iteration to feature a FEMALE Sherlock Holmes. This opens up a whole new audience and window into the classic characters, giving it a new spin (considering Holmes holds the world record for most portrayals). While now a female character, she is still definitely Doyle's Holmes. Brilliant, eccentric and volatile. It's been an interesting journey to see actually how well things translate to a female Holmes. Eg. The whole idea of Holmes creating the career of a "consulting detective" takes a new meaning, due to the fact that a female detective in Scotland Yard was unheard of at the time. While not the grand Sherlockian mystery most are used to, 221B emphasizes the domestic side of the mystery solving duo, often leading to comedic, puzzling and dangerous results. Giving a fresh perspective to the English Icons."
