If you are interested, you may want to compare the above approaches to how one photographer addressed the topic with his use of blackface. He appears to be serious, but does not seem to understand the racist history of the use of blackface.

To take things a step further, if you are interested, you would find it helpful to also understand the use of the gray card and "middle gray" in photography. If interested, you may also want to explore how spot metering works in to all this.
